Squirrels
We used to have this squirrel that lived in our big old pecan tree. He would run around and yell at us if we got to close to the tree, and throw pecans at us if we decided to sit on the swing. He loved to drape himself over one of the big branches of the tree and take a nap, without a care in the world.
It looks so cute on the mantle!
One year, I read about how Japanese farmers put little fabric bags over the growing fruit on their trees to keep all the bugs and birds off, so I spent HOURS making these little sheer bags with drawstrings to cover my peaches. All that did was make a shopping tote for the squirrel. He would come to the tree, pick a bag, chew through the peach stem and then use the drawstring to carry an entire peach up into the pecan tree. He would eat about a quarter of it and then throw everything on the ground. My mom still teases me about that.
He also stole the fish net for my pond, and took it up the tree. Then he chewed the net part out of the frame and tossed the frame down, into the pond.
Then he moved into the soffit of the house over my daughter's room. That was an interesting time.
He was pretty salty for a squirrel, but I am learning that I like animals with bit of an attitude.
When I saw this cute little embroidered mini quilt pattern, I knew I needed to make it, in honor of that salty squirrel I left behind when we moved. The pattern is called "Little Acorns" and it's by Kathy Schmitz. It's hand embroidery, with a little bit of piecing and quilting. The acorns are actually printed fabric that is an iron on applique and they came with the pattern.
Stay healthy,
Deb
