Anxiety Sewing

I decided I needed some time away from the dumpster fire that is 2020, so I locked myself in my sewing room for three days to sew.  It's what I do to process things.  I can just let my mind shut off and shut up and just turn on the auto-pilot and do what I do. I have so many boxes and bags of block swap blocks just WAITING to be set into a quilt.  I love doing block swaps.  In fact, I usually participate even when I don't have time. Or the right fabric. I love them because when I'm sewing and using these quilts, I think of my friends. So that's what I did.  I sewed. I thought of my friends.

Hourglasses and Stars

The first top I completed was this Christmas Hourglass and Stars quilt. My small quilt group swapped red/white and green/white 6 inch half square triangles.  I made hourglasses (quarter square triangles) out of the green and the stars out of the red.  I pulled some aqua fabric with retro Santas on it to make the "odd" block and I love having it in there.

The second top I completed is Steampunk.  The pattern is by Jen Kingwell.   When I first saw the pattern, it was love at first sight. Then a friend and I decided to swap blocks for it over the course of a year.  She made half and I made half. All the blocks are fussy cut and hand pieced and really highlight our personalities.  Included in the blocks are zombies, Little Red Riding Hood, canning jars, Firefly, spiders and spooky stuff, sloths and Christmas trees. The final sashing and assembly was done by machine.  I am thrilled with the result!
I'm so glad I decided to take some time. We all need to remember to carve out even 30 minutes a day away from outside influences to de-stress and center ourselves.
