Taking stock

It's been a long difficult winter and spring for gardeners everywhere. I decided to use my time today to work in the veg garden and take stock.   It's silly for me to expect that this year will be like last year and yet I fall into that trap every year. We've had temperature fluctuations from 20 degrees back up to 85 in the space of 2 days. I've planted tomatoes 3 times, onions 3 times, lost one of my artichokes, lost everything in the greenhouse, started seeds about 4 times.....who would ever think I'd need a heated greenhouse in Texas, for pete's sake.

I planted my peppers today. They were leggy and thin and should have been in the ground a month ago. If I'd seen them at a nursery,  I wouldn't have purchased them, but into the dirt they went. I dug the holes extra deep and had way more peppers than I had room for. I tucked them in corners and altered my garden map. Luckily,  I don't have much else in. As of today, this is what is growing here at the old homestead.  31 pepper plants including red bells, poblano, anaheim, jalapeño and purple jalapeño. 16 tomatoes including Cherokee Purples,  Black Krim, Black Cherry, yellow pear cherry and a couple of volunteers I have no idea what they are, 4 artichoke plants, about a third of the onions I planted, asparagus,  4 pea plants, 13 eggplants, tons of garlic, and 3 of the 35 potatoes I planted. And maybe 4 pieces of fruit combined from 3 fruit trees. A freeze while they were blooming and a freeze with baby fruits pretty much wiped that situation out. I have blackberries and raspberries on the vines, lots of flowers and herbs and a few lettuces that haven't bolted. It's a lot, but not at all where I thought I'd be right now. This coming week,  I hope to get the okra in and get the rest of the garden mulched with 6 inches of wood chips. I still need to purchase a couple of cattle panels and build the trellises for cucumbers and watermelons, and get the squash seeds started (again).

I tried to post a picture of my very sad garden, but I'm working on a tablet and it froze. Luckily, I had saved.  So until I figure out how to make it happen, you'll just have to use your imagination to picture it.

Happy Mother's Day

Deb
